Several weeks ago, Yoko announced his signing with Morning Glory, launching the “Freestyle Métal Froid” in grand fashion at DJ Belleck‘s studio. Originally from Sarcelles, the artist stands out for his mastery of words and concepts. He follows in the footsteps of the great lyricists of French rap. With “Jamel”, his latest music video, he depicts the last day of a young man from Sarcelles, capturing every moment from his morning awakening to 6:30 PM—the tragic hour of his death.
Yoko narrates the final hours of “Jamel”
On Spotify, the instrumental production is credited to Yoko and Appa. Simple yet effective, it adheres to the classic codes of the genre, providing the artist with the perfect backdrop to depict his neighborhood, balancing both its light and dark aspects.
“There are pirates at safe harbor, there are pirates and weed at the right port”
“Most of my enemies have all vanished / No one will be at peace until I’m locked up.”
Directed by Le Clown, the video subtly references the film “La Haine” by Mathieu Kassovitz. It opens and closes with tragedy—the death of “Jamel”. Over the span of 12 hours, we follow the final day of a young man from the neighborhood, hour by hour. The brilliance of this visual lies in its ambiguity: even by the end of the track, the audience remains uncertain as to how the tragedy actually unfolded.
Le Clown had previously collaborated with Yoko on “Sativa 2”, as well as with WaiV on “Trop Méchant” and “Pas Comme Ça”.
