In the vast world of collective compilations, I choose DJ Quick. Following in the footsteps of Sofiane, Jul, and pioneers like “Première Classe” and “Hostile”, DJ Quick, co-founder of the renowned label Mal Luné Music that launched the career of Ninho, has already unveiled several collective projects. This time, he turns his gaze towards the Caribbean with a compilation titled “Code 97”.
DJ Quick invites Kalash to kick off “Code 97”!
Although the Caribbean is rarely highlighted in the mainland, the situation is improving today. Meryl, Kalash, and even some members of the “West Indies” have managed to break through the often impermeable barrier of the mainland audience. With artists like T-Stone and Warped, the Caribbean is making its way into the mainland. Inviting Kalash to create a track for “Code 97” was an obvious choice, especially since he earned a diamond record for the track “Mwaka Moon” from the eponymous album. The first single featuring Jahyanai titled “Closer” had already made a huge impact.
On this track, the composition is credited to Patrice Piquion according to TIDAL credits. The beatmaker also produced the collaboration between T-Stone and Keblack with “Olala”. The composition is slow, heavy, slightly dark but incredibly Caribbean.
Kalash delivers punchlines in Creole on a sunny beach turned into a soundsystem. The video was directed by a pioneer of urban music in France: Nicolas Noël. The director was notably behind the collaboration between Ninho and Heuss L’Enfoiré with “La Marseillaise” and the visual for the track “Ma raison” by Nej’.
