Stockholm, a Little Tehran. The Swedish capital is home to one of the largest Iranian communities in Europe. Persian restaurants abound in the city. Each prepares Jooje or Sultani in its own way. Yet, amidst this avalanche of parsley and coriander, one restaurant, created by Erik Videgard, the star chef from TV4, stands out. Erik Videgard is influenced by his Iranian roots as well as French, Russian, and Indian cuisines. His restaurant, “Coup d’État,” located in the upscale district of Östermalm, offers a remarkable culinary journey.
Erik Videgard Launches His “Coup d’État”!
“Coup d’État” pays tribute to Iran before the Islamic Republic. Some decor elements, sometimes exasperating, sometimes judicious, are scattered about, such as a bust commemorating the Shah’s “Coup d’État” or the utterly kitsch restrooms that surprise visitors with snippets of Iranian radio.

But why do we speak of a “Coup d’État”? French cuisine, championed by its apostles, has never blended with Iranian gastronomy. Yet, it is well-known that Iranian cuisine owes much to Russian dishes. The menu at “Coup d’État” is an invitation to cultural diversity. Beyond the gourmet kebab plates (which bear no resemblance to Turkish döners), the restaurateur offers a truffle Fesenjan, Mahi Shekam Por, and lamb shank. In these times, seeing French and Iranian cuisines coexist on a menu is a testament to open-mindedness. This fusion is reminiscent of the music of singer Taliskeer, who has developed her projects between Paris, Tehran, and New York.
Beware, “Coup d’État” is no ordinary eatery! It is a restaurant for gourmets, featuring an impressive wine list and cocktails crafted by master mixologists. A dinner for two could set you back no less than 500 euros if you wish to eat and drink freely. Nonetheless, the experience remains utterly exceptional.

Under the guidance of Erik Videgard, you are invited to a true cultural journey. And the atmosphere is top-notch. An American waiter moves like a cheerful spirit through the restaurant aisles, offering sage advice and sprinkling his humor among the tables. More than just a restaurant, “Coup d’État” is an authentic experience to be had in Stockholm.
