More than twenty years ago, while Rim’K was performing with his group, 113, a collective born from the “golden triangle” of Vitry-Choisy-Orly, the group won a Victoire de la Musique award for the album « Les Princes de la Ville ». This achievement marked a turning point in the tumultuous relationship between the hip-hop movement and this prestigious ceremony. The tension reached its peak when SCH, a recipient himself, delivered a memorable speech denouncing the exclusion of urban artists.
Many rappers from « the golden age of French rap » continue to perform. However, none have adapted to new sounds as effortlessly as Rim’K. Transitioning from classic boom bap to trap and 2step, Tonton has consistently stayed ahead of the curve. The younger generation is eager to collaborate with him, from Ninho on « Air Max » to SDM on the recent track « Run ». This song, taken from the eponymous EP, was released by the godfather of French rap with little promotion, yet the music video on YouTube has already garnered over 1.2 million views in just two days.
Rim’K and SDM shine with « Run »!
The instrumental composition of the track was crafted by the brilliant duo Boumidjal and Holomobb. A former member of the Double X collective, Boumidjal frequently collaborates with Holomobb. Together, they have created some of the finest works in contemporary French rap, including « Goulag » by Kaaris and « Mendoza » by Niska. They have also produced for artists like Koba LaD and Ninho. The track « Run », both harmonious and captivating, recalls « Demain », another song by Rim’K, blending melody and rap while providing the perfect platform for Rim’K and SDM to deliver their sharp punchlines.
Rim’K showcases his lyrical prowess in this track, with hard-hitting references:
« I’m speeding, leaving trails of powder, fast as fake news / I’m in orbit, no signal left, ambition like Jeff Bezos »
and:
« I’ve got Kevin Durant stats, we’re solid like the Thuram brothers / Masked under the storm, bringing the loot back to the village. »
SDM delivers equally striking lines:
« For my bros, I’ve got compassion, I hit the road, they hit the courtroom (Free the homies). »
The visually stunning music video was directed by the talented Noé Poulin. This director has previously collaborated with Rim’K on « Exoplanète » and « Game Plan », as well as with Jolagreen23 on « Putain d’hiver ». Poulin’s distinctive style elevates the visuals, once again demonstrating his exceptional artistry.
